Yamamoto founded the house in Tokyo in 1972 (some sources cite 1973), debuting the signature line on the Paris runway in 1981, and has remained its sole creative director throughout. The house is defined by deconstruction, all-black and deep monochrome cloth, and deliberately unfinished finishing.
